Even if you have a full-time job.

I often receive numerous questions about how I manage to travel so much. Some of the recurring questions include, “How can you afford to travel so frequently? Are you rich? ” or “You must have a ton of unused annual leave days”.

To address these common inquiries, I’ve decided to put together a quick post sharing my top tips to travel more, making travel both affordable and feasible. In fact, this was one of the main reasons behind launching this blog in the first place.

Hey there, amigos! Feel free to tag along on this journey!

So how can you travel more

You can maximise your travels by using your weekends to travel. Although flights are in general more expensive during weekends, you can always rely on Black Friday deals, buy in advance and so on. If flying is not an option you can also take a cheap shared bus or a train to a new destination.

I do small day tours from London all the time, by bus Flexibus and train: Trip.com and cheap flight deals on Skyscanner these are the websites that we regularly check for cheaper rates.

Now, regarding annual leave, I do wish I had an abundance of holiday days each year or left. Currently, I have a modest 20 days of annual leave, plus the bank holidays. Although I know that not all countries offer the same amount of annual leave, and some companies in the UK are even more generous.

Speaking of work, there are quite a few companies out there that provide flexibility, allowing you to work remotely from virtually anywhere on the globe. My own work schedule involves the typical Monday to Friday, 9-5 bahh. I live a pretty “normal life” including credit card, insurances, full-time job, bills to pay, social life with friends and family.

Because of this, I’m able to truly connect and relate with my readers/followers. I’m essentially just like you.

Unfortunately, I don’t have much wiggle room when working from destinations like Portugal, the Philippines, or London. However, I’m fortunate that my job is in the travel industry and occasionally involves trips to other countries. This brings me to my first set of work-related tips:

6 Best tips to travel more in 2024

Find location-independent jobs

Look for remote job options. Ever since lockdown and how we were all forced to adapt and work from home plus how advanced the technology is now, many companies are open to get employees working from home/anywhere in the world. Having a location-independent job will help travel more as you can be anywhere in the world doing the same job. What should you consider?

Flexibility is key:

Seek opportunities that allow you to be flexible. That don’t involve 9-5 every day in the office, or that allow you to work around the clock or whenever really. Prioritise the kind of companies that believe in the result rather than micromanaging the way the results get achieved.

Consider freelancing or consulting

This is where I would love to be one day. I do this on the side sometimes with small businesses for travel strategy but it is not the same. Platforms such as Upwork, Freelancer and Fiverr are some of the best platforms to get started however, the competition is also bigger. Try reaching out to friends and friends of friends can help you get you in the right step. If you are professional at one thing, why not try to use that for extra income? Perhaps you are great at Social Media or have a second language and can translate media or become a tutor. Freelancing can help you get an extra $$.

Consider starting a blog

Starting a blog is still a great idea! There are millions of websites and trillions of readers. The majority of the things that we eat, buy, travel and watch are available online and we use it daily to make choices. I search endless reviews before buying a car or a frying pan on Amazon, and my boyfriend P (his name is actually Patrick), does not cook without a new recipe. So, another way to be location independent can be by having your own blog. If you want help with starting your blog check make sure to check Blogging She Thrives for tips and Patio Creative for web design both helped me a lot!

Go for travel-related remote jobs

Look for roles where travel is expected. My current 9-5 I get to represent the company across the world and that is extra travel. For example, this year I went to Spain, and this year I’ve been to Germany, China and Brazil!
Consider working for a travel operator, a B2B travel, events manager, Travel Account Manager (this is me!) Online Travel Agencies such as Expedia, Get-Your-Guide, Viator, Booking.com and so many more! If you are amazing with social media, even if not travel-related, you can work with PR companies that organise events worldwide. Consider companies such as FINN partners, Travel Massive, Black Diamond,

Build a personal brand

Some roles might not give that much freedom, travel opportunities and so on, but you can create a personal brand around travel with a blog, social media, vlog etc, or even around any other niche for an audience. I always think about fashion that can be adapted to travel, showcased in beautiful hotels and beaches, and even if the niche has nothing to do with travel, the success of a travel blog/vlog can lead you to travel.

In general, finding a job that allows you to travel as much as possible plus being flexible can be quite hard and it will involve creativity. Also, having a side bossiness or creating your personal brand can be very demanding.
I currently work full-time 9-5, in an office in London and run part-time MiriamMemoirs I spend a lot of my weekends writing content and generating content. The aim is to eventually have a 9-5 on the part-time level.

Everyone works in different ways, but I hope this helps you get an idea of how I get to travel a bit more than before, and how I balance my time between a 9-5 within the travel industry and my passion for travelling.
